Hiking in the Belgian province Luxembourg

11/11/2020

Picture
ME Active - Belgian Luxembourg is the southernmost province of Belgium. It's the largest Belgian province, but also the most sparsely populated province.
BELGIUM | ME ACTIVE | HIKING | PHOTO
The Belgian province of Luxembourg is even 70% larger than the country Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and it's also much more sparsely populated than the neighbouring country. All this makes it perfect for hiking. You will find a lot of nature here.
I hiked from Melreux to La Roche-en-Ardenne. The distance was almost 37 kilometres (23 miles). I did it in one day, but for less trained hikers it is certainly also possible to do this in two or three days. Take a tent with you, as I did, and enjoy this nature experience to the fullest.

Melreux
- let's start this hike

Only 3.5 hours by train to get here from my hometown. Sometimes we forget how wonderful it is to be close to home.

Hotton
- the river Ourthe

__
Wikipedia | Hotton is a very popular place with tourists and is known for its speleothem caves, known as the Caves of Hotton. A small Commonwealth war cemetery with 660 graves is also situated just outside Hotton. Other tourist attractions are Deulin Castle, the Virgin of Werpin, the Faber Mill, St. Peter's Church, Melreux and Riveo Centre.

Hotton
- simple sights

Sometimes a simple sight can bring more peace than we can imagine.

- nature

It's still a long way. Until I'm tired.

La Roche-en-Ardenne
- last sight

Down there in the valley is my next destination. What's your destination today?

La Roche-en-Ardenne
- destination

__
Wikipedia | Lying beside a bend in the River Ourthe, the small town of La Roche-en-Ardenne is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Ardennes. La Roche is believed to have first been settled in the Neolithic era. There is a Celtic archaeological site dating between 850 and 520 BC. The Romans built a fort there following their conquest of Gaul and the Ardennes. The town's medieval castle was in use between the 9th and 18th centuries. It provided protection to the many barges that plied their trade along the local river systems.
Do you know this small town in Belgium? It's a touristic town with many visitors, mostly local and Dutch.

La Roche-en-Ardenne
- history

Above the village you can see an old castle. (844 A.D.) History always reminds us how harsh life was in the world from past civilizations.
