6/6/2017 Days gone by in LimbourgME.SPOT - When I was travelling from the Belgian Liège to Verviers a while ago, I suddenly discovered deeply hidden in the hills around Eupen and Malmedy in the Belgian Ardennes, the small village of Limbourg. by Hanan This village belongs to 'Les Plus Beaux Villages' - the most beautiful villages - of the French-speaking region Wallonia in Belgium. This village was once the capital of the former Duchy of Limbourg and a former fortified town. Limbourg was already founded around the year 1000. The current provinces of Limburg in Belgium and the Netherlands would be named after this village. It’s very exceptional that this village has retained its own character throughout the centuries. In Limbourg you still discover the atmosphere of days gone by. Read more under the photos Enjoy a relaxing walk in this village and head to the central market square Place Saint-Georges with its cobblestones. Stroll through the little alleyways and let yourself be seduced by the charming houses. Or sit down in the sun on the terrace of the village's only café-restaurant. And just enjoy bye looking around. Lovers of history and the Middle Ages fully enjoy in Limbourg, such as the Gothic Saint Georges church of the 15th century, the castles in the area, the old water pump and the stone table. But above all, enjoy the magnificent views of the area because this beautiful old village was built on top of the hills around Eupen. Read more under the photos The houses of Limbourg are from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and look like the time has stood still. Twelve houses and the pavement of the main square are protected as a monument and are part of the cultural heritage in Belgium. The Gothic church dates back to the 15th century. There has hardly changed anything in the last 200 years. Very remarkable is also a 300-year-old linden tree. This beautiful village could save its architectural heritage to the satisfaction of its residents and visitors. Limbourg was therefore included in the list of exceptional cultural heritage of Wallonia. __ Watch also | 'Limbourg in pictures' Comments are closed.
