MALTA COASTAL WALK, AN IMPRESSIVE HIKE AROUND A BEAUTIFUL MEDITERRANEAN ISLAND

15/11/2019

Picture
ME Active - A few days before I boarded the airplane to Malta, I thought, "Let's do something active and hike around the island." And that's  what I did.

HIKING | PHOTO | STORY
I took my hiking boots and hiked around the island in 8 days. And 162 kilometres (101 miles) later I had a bloody good feeling about it.

How my Maltese
story started

When I first came here a few years ago, I immediately felt in love with this country. Last winter I spent half of my time in Malta, and probably this winter even more.

"The beautiful historical
heritage and the blue sea
all year round."
So what always brings me back to Malta? Honestly, in the first place the beautiful Mediterranean weather and the beauty of the country. Secondly, the friendliness of the Maltese people, the beautiful historical heritage and the blue sea all year round. And last but not least, their food is great and, by the way, much cheaper than in my home country.

Let's hike and tell
you a new story

"I just started here in Spinola Bay on my long-distance hike around the entire island of Malta. I think it will be about 155 kilometres (96 miles) at the end. How many days do I need? No idea. I just go and will see."

Day one

"On my first hiking day from my Malta Coastal Walk around the entire island of Malta, the Pembroke Heritage Trail was certainly the most beautiful part."
Picture
Day 1 -6h50m
30 October 2019
Balluta Bay -> Bugibba
19.6 kilometres - 12.2 miles
"The site in Pembroke offers the beauty of Mediterranean biodiversity and a unique walk through military history."
__
"Military training with
shooting practice."
"The highlight is the Madliena Tower. This watchtower was is 1658 on or near the site of a medieval watch post. Nowadays the armed forces of Malta use the tower to give a warning when a military training with shooting practice is underway at the domain. Then you better go around."

Day two

"It was quite difficult to choose a picture from my second walking day along the Maltese coast, because nature was very overwhelmingly beautiful everywhere."
Picture
Day 2 - 5h30m
31 October 2019
Bugibba -> Ghadira Bay
16.1 kilometres - 10.0 miles
"So I chose a very neutral photo because nature also had very different views. Be sure to check out my Instagram Hightlights 'Malta Walk' to discover more."
"And maybe I'll write and show  some more later about this area. Maybe."

Day three

"On my third walking day along the coast of Malta, the weather was not always perfect. I even had to stop my hike early because of a heavy thunderstorm."
Picture
Day 3 - 6h00m
1 November 2019
Ghadira Bay -> Popeye Village
16.9 kilometres - 10.5 miles
"The Coral Lagoon was definitely my highlight today. And the sun was shining just enough at that time to capture the lagoon."
__
"So guys, put on
your hiking boots."
"It's one of the most incredible places on the island, however, it's very little known because it's difficult to reach as there is no public transport. So guys, put on your hiking boots."

Shared by Thierry Hanan Scheers (@metravelblog) op 20 Jan 2017 om 12:31 (PST)

Day four

"It was quite a challenge this fourth hiking day along the Maltese coast. But the views were amazingly beautiful as you can see."
Picture
Day 4 - 6h30m
2 November 2019
Popeye Village -> Bahrija
16.8 kilometres - 10.4 miles
"Most people don't expect this from Malta, but there were quite a few climbs on the program today. Malta may not have mountains and only small hills, but when I had to climb up and down at the cliffs today, I could really feel my breath."
__
"The only option was
to climb the cliff again."
"The second challenge was the narrow and slippery paths at the cliffs. If there were any paths, sometimes the paths were simply gone. Then the only option was to climb the cliff again after I had descended 30 minutes between rocks. Nature took these paths back by erosion of water and wind."
"This hike was defintely worth it, and that's how I like them. Just nature at its best."

Day five

"With a few exceptions it was mostly flat today and that's why I was able to cover quite a distance on the fifth day of my walk along the coast of Malta."
Picture
Day 5 - 7h00m
3 November 2019
Bahrija -> Zurrieq
24.2 kilometres - 15.0 miles
"Mostly I walked at the top of the cliffs and sometimes a little bit more inland, because excisting coastal paths run on private land. Either the owners have closed the paths with a large fence, or they have a large barking dog."
__
"The cliffs are up to
250 metres high and
form a natural wall."
"At the Dingli Cliffs it was different. Here I could walk almost anywhere close to the coast. The cliffs are up to 250 metres (820 feet) high and form a natural wall of 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) long. It's also the highest point of Malta."

Shared by Thierry Hanan Scheers (@metravelblog) op 20 Jan 2017 om 12:31 (PST)

Day six

"This sixth hike along the Maltese coast was certainly not the most pleasant. But I did get a nice ending in the colourful Marsaxlokk."
Picture
Day 6 - 5h30m
4 November 2019
Zurrieq -> Marsaxlokk
18.3 kilometres - 11.4 miles
"Marsaxlokk is especially famous for the many luzzus in its harbour. The colourful traditional Maltese fishing boats, the luzzu, is one of the symbols of Malta. The painted eye on each side of the prow is an old Phoenician custom, believed to protect the boats from evil."
__
"There was always a
piece of nature in between
these noisy areas."
"But before I arrived in Marsaxlokk, I had to make my way through three industry and harbour areas. Fortunately there was always a piece of nature in between these noisy areas that was worth the effort."

Shared by Thierry Hanan Scheers (@metravelblog) op 20 Jan 2017 om 12:31 (PST)

Day seven

"I didn't know what to expect from my seventh hiking day along the coast of Malta. It was a part of Malta that I never visited before and, apart from the famous St. Peter Pool, I rarely saw photos and heard stories about it. And nature was surprisingly beautiful."
Picture
Day 7 - 6h30m
5 November 2019
Marsaxlokk -> Rinella Bay
22.7 kilometres - 14.1 miles
"It's for this kind of view I love to hike."

Shared by Thierry Hanan Scheers (@metravelblog) op 20 Jan 2017 om 12:31 (PST)

Day eight

"At my eight and last hiking day around Malta I walked always through city. Two places are really highlights to me: the fortified Three Cities and the Maltese capital Valletta."
__

Picture
Day 8 - 7h40m
6 November 2019
Rinella Bay -> Balluta Bay
27.7 kilometres - 17.2 miles
"I tryed to capture both in one picture from the Grand Harbour. At the next picture you see at the left Valletta and the right Fort Saint Angelo, a bastioned fort in Birgu - one of the Three Cities. And in the middle, that's just me if you didn't noticed."

Shared by Thierry Hanan Scheers (@metravelblog) op 20 Jan 2017 om 12:31 (PST)

"Bye the way, today I reached also my end destination Balluta Bay, the place where I left  8 days ago. I hiked around the whole island of Malta. 162 kilometres (or 101 miles)."
Picture
The entire route day by day

Not my first hike
in Malta

The first time I came to Malta, I spent my time on the nearby island of Gozo, and let me be honest, I am even more in love with this island. That first time I hiked around the entire island of Gozo in 4 days. That was my first experience with Malta.
