6 things to visit in Malmö

Picture
ME.TUDE - Visiting Malmö in Sweden for the first time? Then I think you should check out these venues. It will involve a stroll or a bike ride, and will offer both old and new.
by Hanan
If you feel like having a snack or taking a dip in the sea along the way, you can do that too. It can be difficult to pick out the highlights in a citylike Malmö. That’s why I give you some tips for things you should absolutely not miss.

Västra Hamnen with Turning Torso and Stapelbäddsparken

Västra Hamnen is one of Malmö’s most expansive town parts and a shop window to the surrounding area. One of the greatest sights is architect Santiago Calatrava’s spectacular residential skyscraper Turning Torso. It reaches a spectacular 190 metre (208 yard) height and twists 90 degress from the base to the top.

The area is also home to Stapelbäddsparken, a skatepark that has attracted of lot of attention. The skateboarding park is covering an area of 2,000 square metres (2,200 yards) – making it one of the largest and best such facilities is all of Europe.

The area Västra Hamnen, is certainly worth a stroll with its winding alleys, interesting architecture and super nice beaches and bathing places.

Lilla Torg

A cosy spot in the heart of the city, with food and drink to suit most tastes. This charming square was constructed in 1592 and is filled with open-air cafés and a wonderful atmostphere. People like to meet in Lilla Torg over lunch, a coffee or a drink. In the summertime the square is transformed into one great fresco dining venue. For many, Lilla Torg is a natural start to the evening, due to the fact that many of Malmö's most popular nightclubs are nearby.

Slottsparken and the Malmöhus Castle

It is no surprise that Malmö is famous for its parks. The city has 15 large, green oases, each wit hits own special characer. Malmö is sometimes called the city of parks.

A real gem is Slottsparken (Castle Park). This park offers a mix of forest, hills and open fields. It has also a beautiful Japanese garden. At the castle, which is the oldest preserved Renaissance castle in the Nordic region, you’ll find the Malmö Museum with its aquarium. The exhibitions deal with history, technology, maritime navigation, and nature.

Ribersborg Beach and Kallbadhuset

On the fine sandy beach at Ribersborg you can bathe in central Malmö. This is also home to the popular, listed Kallbadhuset dating from the early 20th century.
At Ribersborg’s cold bath house, you can enjoy a wood-fired sauna and nude bathing in the sea all year round, and due to it’s separate women’s and men’s section, no swimsuits are required. And the location by Ribersborg beach is ideal, with it’s 3 kilometre (1.9 mile) long sandy beach which is packed with people enjoying swimmming in the sea when the weather is hot.

Saint Petri Church

This church is the oldest building in Malmö, with foundations from the early 1300s. The church is built as a basilica with three naves and a transept in Baltic brick gothic.

Shopping and Emporia

A large proportion of Malmö’s shops are clustered around a collection of pedestrian streets. You will find a choice of shopping centres with inviting pedrestian zones, featuring everything from large chain stores to small, exciting concept stores. Many of these pedestrian streets are also home to numerous cosy restaurants and cafés, where you can rest your tired feet.

If you feel like escaping the city centre for a while, take the train to Hyllie. Just a few hundred metres from the station is Emporia. It’s one of Scandinavia’s largest shopping malls. The building itself is worth a visit. You can find a spectacular green roof garden terrace with incredible views of Malmö and the Öresund bridge
